Two journalists were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List this weekend.
Woman’s Hour presenter Jenni Murray was made a dame in recognition for her services to radio and former local newspaper editor Peter Atkins received an MBE for services to journalism.
In a piece written for today’s Daily Mail, Murray writes:
To progress from ‘the most dangerous woman in England’, pilloried for her ‘openly feminist lifestyle’ circa 1992, to Dame nearly 20 years on is a matter of personal pride and, I hope, a signal that an assumption of a woman’s equal right to the same opportunities as a man is now part of the Establishment

Atkins, 70, is a former editor of the Staffordshire Newsletter and also a former managing director of the Burton Daily Mail.
He told HoldTheFrontPage.com: ‘It is a great honour to be recognised for my services to the community in which I have greatly enjoyed living for the past 40 years.
“To also be recognised for my contributions to journalism, which has been fulfilling, enjoyable and challenging career is very gratifying.”
