Belfast Telegraph wins regional newspaper award

The Belfast Telegraph scooped the regional newspaper of the year prize at the Newspaper Society's Circulation, Promotional and Editorial Awards in Manchester last night.

The newspaper, edited by Martin Lindsay, launched a Saturday compact edition which it rolled out across the week, in the last year. It was the only metropolitian evening newspaper to experience gains in the latest ABCs, up 2.5 per cent to 93,786 in its Monday to Saturday figures.

The Irish News won the campaigning daily newspaper of the year award for its work on the Guiseppe Conlon case, father of one of the Guildford Four. Photographer of the year went to the newspaper's Brendan Murphy. The campaigning weekly title went to Weston & Somerset Mercury for its Top of the Pops and Text to Teach campaign.

Community newspapers of the year were the Manchester Evening News and the Welweyn & Hatfield Times in the daily and weekly categories respectively.

Lewis Hannam, Norwich Evening News, won regional journalist of the year and Nick Owens of the Lancashire Evening Post won the youth category. Young photographer of the year was Anthony Chappel-Ross of York's Evening Press. Regional magazine of the year was the Cambridgeshire Journal produced by the Cambridge Evening News.
