Writers pick their prized politicians

By Press Gazette

A photographic collaboration featuring political commentators alongside their favourite politicians appears in this month’s issue of Editorial Intelligence journal, writes Zoe Smith.

The pictures, including Mathew d’Ancona and John Reid (above), were taken in collaboration with Reuters, illustrate the magazine’s theme, which questions the relationship between the political commentator and the politician. The issue also contains a list of the politicians’ favourite journalists.

EI editor Sophie Radice said: "We asked the question of six or seven big-name commentators and interestingly they all came up with different answers."

Articles include Suzanne Moore on why the political is personal, Peter Preston exploring how close commentators should get to politicians and A.C. Grayling on the morality of being a political commentator.

With the launch of The Guardian’s Comment is free website, competition in the comment market is hotting up, but Julia Hobsbawm, EI’s chief executive, said: "It’s very interesting that the nationals are picking up on something that Editorial Intelligence has identified. EI is still the only independent business devoted to the world of comment and opinion."
