Trinity Mirror listens to NUJ

By Press Gazette

Re: “NUJ falls at final hurdle in bid to represent Racing Post”
(Press Gazette, 29 July), and Steve Turner’s reiteration that “it makes
sense” for the BAJ, with no members and no staff officials, to
represent Trinity Mirror sports journalists in the division.

The
latest house agreement for three per cent, which Turner claims to have
negotiated, was turned down by the BAJ, which suggested sports division
journalists take industrial action. The NUJ chapel voted unanimously to
accept. The BAJ then changed its mind and agreed to it in days. Make of
this what you will, but it’s in keeping with the fact that the NUJ
chapel also negotiated the terms of the seven-day publishing agreement
with management.

Despite the ludicrous legal situation that
denies us recognition, sports division management listen – though they
would rather not – to the NUJ chapel. Their cosy relationship with
Turner is a charade to avoid official negotiation with the true
representatives of the staff.
