The Independent on Sunday's annual list of the most influential gay men and women in Britain this year includes three national newspaper journalists.
Matthew Parris, Johann Hari and Andrew Pierce were included in the paper's "Pink List" of 101 movers and shakers in business, politics, the arts and other professions.
Introducing the list, Andrew Tuck wrote: "A few years ago we ran 20 names, some of whom needed persuading to appear. This year we had to choose from hundreds of suggestions. And let's make it clear, all the people on this list are leaders in their own fields; nobody is featured just because of their own sexuality."
Parris, a political commentator and former Conservative MP, was ranked 73rd, up seven slots on his appearance at 80 last year. The columnist joined the Times as a parliamentary sketch writer two years after he left Parliament in 1986, before becoming a regular fixture on the comment pages in 2001.
Columnist Johann Hari leapt twelve places from 79 in last year's table to 67. At 27 he became the youngest journalist to be short-listed for the Orwell Prize this year. His columns appear regularly in The Independent and Evening Standard, while he occasionally appears on Newsnight Review and in print abroad in Le Monde and The New York Times.
Times assistant editor (news) Andrew Pierce was a new entry onto the list at number 49. For four years, he co-presented the Sunday Service politics show on Radio 5 and is now the regular political commentator on LBC.
