The Shetland Weekly folds

By Press Gazette

By Hamish Mackay

Scotland’s newest paid-for newspaper, The Shetland Weekly, has folded after only nine issues.

The full-colour 32-page tabloid, which had a target circulation of
about 6,000, ceased publishing last week after holding company Shetland
Weekly Ltd went into receivership.

Shetland Weekly Ltd managing
director Maurice Mullay said: “We had to bend to the inevitable. We had
an excellent product and a very talented team of reporters, but we just
didn’t have time to find our financial footing.”

The Shetland
Weekly hit the newsstands on 19 April after its original launch was
postponed when it lost its chairman, managing director, editor,
assistant editor and three reporters.

The closure means rival weekly The Shetland Times once again has a monopoly in the UK’s northernmost islands.
