Sky coverage for 7/7 garners Emmy award

By Press Gazette

Sky News's coverage of the 7/7 attacks has won the International Emmy Award for Breaking News.

The channel was awarded the prize at a ceremony in New York on Monday and saw off competition from BBC News 24, which was also nominated for its coverage of the attacks on London, Argentina's Artear-Canal 13 and Al Arabiya of Dubai.

The judges commended Sky News for its "fast and accurate" reporting of the day's events.

Sky News was the first television broadcaster to report incidents on the London Underground on 7 July last year and first to report that a bomb had exploded on a bus.

Within 30 minutes of the story breaking, Sky News was broadcasting footage from the scene at Aldgate tube station via its SkyCopter.

Head of news John Ryley said: "Sky News's outstanding live coverage of last summer's terrorist attacks reinforces the team's reputation for breaking news and sharp analysis."

Earlier this week the channel announced the appointment of a viewer's editor to give a "human face" to the increasing number of viewer contributions.

Former political correspondent Paul Bromley takes up the new on-air role and his brief will include collating and sorting all viewer correspondence.

The position is similar to that of a newspaper's letters page editor and Bromley, who will appear on the Sky News channel to reflect the range of viewers' opinions on important running stories, will identify potential interviewees — including webcam contributors — develop news angles and deciding which contributions to broadcast.

Bromley said: "It's a great opportunity to show the thousands of viewers who contact Sky News every day that their views are being listened to, and we hope that it will encourage further debate on all the burning issues."
