Shetland rival launches

By Press Gazette

Scotland’s newest title, the Shetland Weekly, has launched with sales approaching 6,500.

Editor Ryan Taylor told Press Gazette: “The paper has been very well received by our readers.

We have had a lot of positive feedback and Shetlanders appear to welcome the opportunity for a fresh slant on things.”

The
Shetland Weekly ran into difficulties when it lost its chairman,
managing director, editor, assistant editor and two reporters in the
run-up to its original launch date. Publication was put back one month.

Taylor, elevated from chief reporter to editor, has hired reporter Graeme Gibson to boost his depleted staff.

The
weekly, which has a cover price of 65p, is in direct competition with
the longestablished Shetland Times, which sells about 11,500 copies.
