Omaar: going freelance
BBC News correspondent Rageh Omaar is in negotiations with the corporation about various broadcast work after resigning from his staff post last week.
Omaar, currently writing two books following his rise to international fame in the wake of the war in Iraq, told Press Gazette he was “renegotiating terms and position at the BBC”, and not necessarily leaving the broadcaster.
“Leaving my staff position is not the same as leaving the BBC,” he said.
Omaar was BBC News’s Africa correspondent, based in Johannesburg, before the war broke out.
However, Omaar’s agent confirmed he was in talks with a number of broadcasters. “The BBC is just one company that is putting together an offer,” he said.
Omaar’s BBC career began in 1991, when he moved to Ethiopia to freelance as a foreign correspondent for BBC World Service.
