The deputy head of BBC Television News has decided to leave the corporation after a 33-year career.
Rachel Attwell's announcement came on the same day that the corporation revealed it was to cut 108 jobs from the BBC News division as part of director general Mark Thompson's Value For Money efficiency initiative.
Attwell said: "I am very proud of what we have achieved in TV News over the past six years — in particular, to see BBC News 24 move from the sidelines into the heart of BBC News and to become a respected and successful news channel."
She now intends to look for new opportunities in her "third age".
In 1973, Attwell joined the BBC as a production secretary on Radio 4's Woman's Hour. She then went on to work in radio news and in 2000, was appointed deputy head of BBC Television News, with responsibility for both BBC News 24 and BBC World.
Since 2006 she has also been responsible for both Production and Operations across TV News.
