BBC Scotland’s national governor, Sir Robert Smith, will step down later this year.
Sir Robert, who is also chairman of the Broadcasting Council for Scotland, will become chairman of Scottish & Southern Energy from the new year.
He is also chairman of engineering firm Weir Group and a nonexecutive director of financial giant Aegon.
Sir Robert, who has been national governor since 1999, said his hectic work schedule had led to his decision to leave.
He said he was sad to leave the BBC, and BBC Scotland in particular.
He will leave BBC Scotland at Christmas.
Ken MacQuarrie, controller of BBC Scotland, said: “Under Sir Robert’s leadership, the broadcasting council played a major role in monitoring the recent review of all BBC Scotland journalism and his personal vision, commitment and drive have made the new headquarters building at Pacific Quay, Glasgow, a reality.”
