Sky News breakfast presenter Simon McCoy is taking his liking for early-morning starts over to the BBC as a co-host of BBC One’s Breakfast and presenter on the revamped News 24.
From next year, McCoy will deputise for Breakfast’s other male presenters, Dermot Murnaghan and Bill Turnbull, and will present important breaking news stories on location for BBC News 24.
Currently co-anchor on Sky News’s Sunrise programme, McCoy has worked at the channel since its launch in 1989, first as a producer and then as royal correspondent. He also presented the Tonight programme on Friday nights until 1997.
A former news editor at TV-am, McCoy began his journalism career at London’s Fleet Street News Agency in 1981, later going into television as a researcher and scriptwriter at Thames Television.
Rachel Attwell, deputy head of BBC television news, said viewers would benefit from an additional presenter on Breakfast, adding that McCoy’s talent and experience “will be an asset to BBC News 24”.
