Harry Weaver, whose work as a freelance journalist appeared for many years in a wide range of British newspapers, has died in Surrey, aged 82. He was the author of several books on naval history, socialism, and sports.
He was born in Portsmouth in 1924 and was educated in Ireland and Glasgow. At the end of the war in 1945, he helped in the German Relief Camps close to Dresden, before engaging in his chosen career of journalism.
He worked in the North of England, the Midlands, and in Fleet Street, for the Daily Sketch, the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday, the Evening Standard and The Observer and as a stringer for the Daily Express in Rome.
He wrote several books, occasionally with co-authors, on such varied subjects as darts, Reid’s hotel in Madeira, religion, socialism and golf.
