Grampian TV is on the lookout for a new head of news and current affairs, following Henry Eagles’ move to sister channel Scottish Television to become executive producer of a new Scottish Football League highlights programme.
Eagles was in charge of Grampian’s flagship regional news bulletin, North Tonight, and the current affairs programmes Seven Days and Politics Now, which launched in January to report on debates and committees at Holyrood, Westminster and the European Parliament.
He also oversaw the news and current affairs team’s move to the new £5m Aberdeen digital headquarters last June, which included the introduction of editorial staff to desktop video editing.
After several tussles with the NUJ, new pay terms were introduced to compensate for the staff’s added responsibilities.
Eagles was also executive producer for a number of co-productions with Scottish Television, including Scottish Politician of the Year and a strand of independent documentaries called This Scotland, which he will remain in charge of.
Derrick Thomson, Grampian TV’s managing director, said Eagles did “a power of work with me in building the new Grampian.
“Henry reorganised the whole news operation structure and we worked well together to deliver that.
“The person that’s coming in to this post is going to have to be an excellent individual to follow in the footsteps of somebody of Henry’s qualities, but I’m sure there are many people out there who fit the bill.”
The new head of news and current affairs is expected to be in place by next month.
