Final Bruce book wins two awards

By Press Gazette

Author and journalist Mandy Bruce has won two awards for her final book, which she did not live to see published.

Competing against entries from 15 countries, Bruce’s lavishly illustrated history of the original Wheelers oyster and fish restaurant in Whitstable, Kent, was up against rivals such as the internationally renowned Larousse guide.

The Oyster Seekers won the Englishlanguage category of the prestigious Gourmand Cookbook Awards for Best Fish and Seafood Book in the World, after also winning UK Best Book.

Her husband, journalist Ross Tayne, said: “Mandy was only 48 when she died 10 months ago, shortly before publication, but luckily she lived long enough to see some of the first page proofs and the cover design. She was thrilled. These awards will be a wonderful, lasting memorial.”

While writing for papers including the Daily Express and Sunday Mirror, Bruce pursued a parallel career as an author of a diverse range of books, from children’s books to bestsellers such as one ghost-written with Kate Kray, widow of gangster Ronnie.
