Leo Devine has been appointed head of regional and local programmes at BBC South East.
He replaces Laura Ellis, who will become chief assistant to the controller of English regions, Andy Griffee, when she returns from maternity leave in April.
Devine was previously head of regional and local programmes for BBC South West.
His career began in the Eighties when he worked as a journalist and presenter for the BBC in the East Midlands and London.
Since then he has worked for BBC Radio Leicester, BBC Radio Cornwall and BBC Cambridge, where in 1995 he was appointed editor. He was the driving force behind the television and radio newsgathering operation for the area serving Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties.
In his new role at BBC South East, based in Tunbridge Wells, Devine will be responsible for the regional TV news programmes for Kent and Sussex, BBC South East Today, BBC Radio Kent, BBC Southern Counties Radio and the regional online and “Where I Live” websites.
He said: “After five fantastic years in Plymouth, I’m excited by the challenges that lie ahead in the South East. I’m looking forward to working with staff in the region to develop the services we offer to audiences in Kent and Sussex across TV, radio and online.”
