Charles Creswell has been made editor of Doctor after 12 years on the GPs’ magazine, writes Ruth Addicott.
Creswell joined the Reed Business Information title as a sub-editor before moving across to the news desk and becoming a reporter.
He was managing editor (features) before taking over as acting editor when editor Phil Johnson left to edit Pulse in the summer.
Creswell said Doctor planned to develop more supplements next year and increase the amount of practical advice for GPs.
“We are basically focusing on the new GP contract. We have been focusing on that for a while and we have lots of plans to develop content related to that,” he said.
“We have got a programme of roadshows, providing GPs with practical information on how to deal with the contract and we’ll be rolling out an even bigger programme next year.”
But Creswell said there were no plans for a relaunch.
Doctor dropped its traditional format and designed a special front page to mark the landmark decision by GPs to accept the new contract in June. Instead of the usual four stories and a picture, the cover (pictured above) featured just 38 words to highlight what was believed to be the biggest change for general practice in nearly 40 years. The title has been covering the issue for two years.
Doctor is expected to recruit some new staff but it is still unclear what the positions will be.
Commenting on his promotion after 12 years’ service, Creswell said: “I’m delighted, I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
