Breaking news and the regional press

By Press Gazette

Brian Aitken, editor of The
Journal , Newcastle, said: “Regional newspapers have to care about
breaking news – just not to the same extent as we once did. People can
access news from a vast array of sources these days. The regionals
can’t ignore big breaking news stories – but they have to maintain
excellent local and regional coverage at the same time.”

Jane Wolstenholme,
editor at the Liverpool Daily Post, said: “We’ve got to be far cleverer
about what we offer. There needs to be a better package with analysis,
campaigns and entertainment and we still need to break exclusives of
our own. If you are going to cover stories that other media have
covered you are not offering anything more than TV or radio.”
