Kate Betts, former editor of Harpers Bazaar in the US, has edited a special Style & Design issue of Time magazine.
The 55-page glossy, which is Betts’ first editing project since leaving the style magazine, will be available on news-stands throughout Europe from 6 October.
“My goal was to create a product that would appeal to both the Time reader and to the fashion industry,” she said.
“My personal point of view on fashion has always been to give the general reader an inside glimpse into the industry. Beautiful, luxurious visuals and intelligent reporting do not have to be mutually exclusive. That was my MO at Vogue, Bazaar, and what I am bringing to Time.
“The stories are not too inside that they would not interest a general reader, and yet they have enough of a fashion quotient to appeal to the industry,” she said.
The magazine will examine the role of race in fashion. The cover features Ethiopian model Liya Kebede, who signed a multimillion-dollar contract with Estée Lauder in April and became the first black model to be signed to their books in 57 years.
It also includes an interview with fashion designer Jill Sander, an article on the design of a perfume bottle and the conception of a snappy TV advert.
Time’s global Style & Design issue launched in February as a spin-off to the European Fashion issue which was published twice in Europe last year. It has a print run of more than one million copies.
