Tabloid Indy: no production hitches

The new tabloid-size Independent sold roughly 40,000 copies when it hit newsagents in London on Tuesday – half its print run.

Sources at The Independent were unable to say on Wednesday what the effect was on the total (broadsheet and tabloid) sale would be.

Sixty distribution staff were touring the capital’s 8,000 newsagents to ensure the new edition was being prominently displayed. Editor Simon Kelner said there had been no production problems and said: “It’s had a fantastic response from readers, advertisers and even other papers and media commentators. I’m heartened by the number of calls and e-mails we’ve had which are well into treble figures with hardly a single negative comment.”
