Some 40 members of editorial staff at Newsquest Scotland have volunteered for redundancy as the company proposes to cut between £2m and £3m from annual budgets.
According to the NUJ, further volunteers are being sought, but the company has not revealed how many it is seeking. Some older journalists are still awaiting pension figures.
Across all three Scottish titles – the Herald, the Sunday Herald and Evening Times – there are between 250 members of editorial staff (according to the union) and 300 (according to Newsquest).
Newsquest said it is looking at new editorial structures as a result of the introduction of a new IT production system in September.
The union is this week due to meet with management to discuss the proposals and how to produce the publications with fewer journalists.
Almost 1,000 people have signed a petition against the cuts. They call on Newsquest to honour its pledge not to damage the quality of the titles.
