20th anniversary supplement

By Press Gazette

This 24-page supplement marking the 20th anniversary of the miners’ strike was part of the biggest edition ever produced in the 146-year history of the Rotherham Advertiser.

The 136-page issue was a record for the paper, whose sales are up 4 per cent year-on-year, with a latest ABC of 32,359.

The Advertiser covered some of the most bitter clashes in the yearlong strike, as well as the day-today issues, in an area which was at the heart of the South Yorkshire coalfields. It was the 1984 closure of Cortonwood pit, in the Advertiser’s patch, which helped trigger the national strike a week later.

Editor Doug Melloy said: “The team has done a splendid job, and the supplement reflects the human face behind the year-long social and industrial conflict.”
