Time Out’s consultant editor Guy Dimond has won the top accolade at the Glenfiddich Food and Drink Awards.
Dimond, who began writing for Time Out’s eating and drinking guide 15 years ago, picked up the Glenfiddich Trophy and also Best Restaurant Critic. The judging panel said it recognised the depth, quality and consistent integrity of his reporting on eating and drinking in London.
Dimond said: “I was up against people I idolise, such as Radio Four’s Derek Cooper, so I was shocked and very pleased to have won.”
The awards began in 1970 and honour the writers and broadcasters – both leaders in their field and newcomers or ‘Independent Spirits’ – who find inspiration at the bar, on the menu and on the wine list.
Other winners were: Food Writer: Philippa Davenport, Financial Times. Cookery Writer: Angela Nilsen, BBC Good Food. Drink/Bar Writer: Roger Protz, The Guardian and What’s Brewing. Wine Writer: Tim Atkin, The Observer Magazine and Observer Food Monthly. Regional Writer: Alastair Gilmour, The Journal. TV Programme: Nick Nairn, Nick and the Dinner Ladies. Radio Programme: Bombay Lunch Boxes, The Food Programme. Photography: Giacomo Bretzel, Telegraph Magazine. 2004 Glenfiddich Independent Spirit: Randolph Hodgson, Neal’s Yard Dairy.
