The Irish office of the NUJ has announced a satisfactory settlement between Ed Moloney and the Sunday Tribune, following his dismissal on 1 November last year.
In 1999 Moloney, who was the paper’s Northern Ireland editor, successfully challenged an order under the Prevention of Terrorism Act to hand over to a court his notes on an interview with a UDA suspect for the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane. He was sacked for refusing to return to Belfast after writing a book on the IRA.
He told the editor who sacked him, Matt Cooper, who has since left the paper, that a move back to Belfast would endanger the lives of him and his family.
Moloney now lives in the US.
