Daily Mirror 3am editor Eva Simpson has been poached by News International’s thelondonpaper to become assistant editor.
Simpson is one of the original “3am girls”. Remaining “3am girl” Caroline Hedley is currently based in the USA.
Simpson is to become acting deputy editor of the free daily when current deputy Bridget Harrison is on maternity leave.
Thelondonpaper editor Stefano Hatfield said: “Eva is an exceptional talent, who has created a brand within a brand at the Mirror. She and her colleagues changed Fleet Street’s approach to celebrity and entertainment coverage, achieving international renown along the way.
“She has a an A-list contacts book and real understanding of both established and new cultural talent. Eva also has genuine insight into the dynamic, forward-thinking and diverse London that the young, urban readers of thelondonpaper will recognise.”
The hiring of Simpson follows the thelondonpaper’s poaching of Evening Standard media reporter Alexa Baracaia to become arts and entertainment editor.
Hatfield said: “Eva’s appointment demonstrates the continuing ability of thelondonpaper to attract some of the best talent around, and in so doing distinguish ourselves from our rivals.”
