Anyone pondering whether it is worth remaining a member of, or
joining, the National Union of Journalists, might be interested in my
experiences.
I remember the NUJ stepping in to save my job when I was just a few weeks into my journalistic career.
Now, as a freelance more than 20 years later, I have benefited from another aspect of their expertise.
Throughout
last year I was chasing a multi-national company that owed mealmost
£1,000 for journalistic work I had carried out. Despite repeated
promises, the money never arrived.
So I turned to Sylvia Pedder
in the NUJ’s freelance department and within one month of Sylvia taking
up the case the cheque for the full amount was in my bank. I hope I
don’t have to call on the NUJ for a third time but it is re-assuring to
know I will receive a first class service if I do.
