Yesterday marked ten years since the birth of the Drudge Report, the now infamous and highly lucrative blog by the mysterious Matt Drudge. For some bloggers the advent of Drudge marked the end of the mainstream media’s dominance.
Political blogger Guido Fawkes, unsurprisingly, is one of them and argues that Drudge’s first and most famous scoop – that Newsweek had spiked the story of Bill Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky – “ended once and for all the gate-keeper ability, if not the mentality, of the media elite.
The Daily Telegraph’s US correspondent said recently that Drudge was the most important media figure in the US Presidential election.
As Time magazine reports, Drudge, 39, gets 10m readers a day and makes a seven figure sum (in US dollars) each year.
Drudge watchers may have read Phillip Weissman from New York Magazine’s unsuccessful but readable attempts to find the man himself last year.
