Sub-editors vote for minimum wage of £130 per day

By Richard Wilson

A group of sub-editors have voted to ban adverts from their online forum that offer a fee below £130 per day.

SubsUK, a Yahoo! group established in May 2005, provides a platform for its 829 members to keep in touch as well as providing employers with a place to advertise long-term, permanent or emergency vacancies. It currently carries around six adverts a day.

Some 70 per cent of the group have voted for the ban, with group moderator Puneet Bhandal claiming stagnant rates since the 1990s have forced many talented sub-editors to consider careers elsewhere.

Bhandal said: “If you compare the rates of a freelance sub-editor with other professional contracts and take into account their skills, day rates are pitifully low. Freelance subs seem to have had enough.”
