Star billing for Irish radio station

By Press Gazette

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has given the radio station Dublin’s Country 106.8 approval to change its name to Star FM.

The name change is part of an effort by the station to increase its listenership, which still lags behind other Dublin commercial stations. Lawyers for the Star newspaper had warned the station in advance of the change that in bearing the name “Star” it could be infringing the intellectual rights of the paper. Negotiations are continuing between the two sides.

Country chief executive Sean Ashmore welcomed the BCI decision.
