Real Radio, Guardian Media Group’s Yorkshire-based station, has become the first commercial radio station in the UK to fully sponsor a postgraduate journalism student.
In a bid to nurture and retain young talent, the sponsorship programme includes payment of £4,500 tuition fees, a work attachment at the radio station and personal training sessions with a career mentor.
The first postgraduate student to benefit is Kate Bradbrook, who is taking a masters in broadcast journalism at Sheffield University.
She said: “It’s a great opportunity because I’m now associated with a media group and I’m building up a base of contacts in radio.”
The station launched Real Radio Media School last September to give students from primary school level to further education colleges practical experience in broadcasting. Its popularity and success in the first term have ensured further funding for the next two years.
