Press freedom report calls for investigation into threats against journalists in Yemen

By Julie Tomlin

Global press freedom campaigners Article 19 have published a 35-page report examining press freedom in Yemen.

Called Yemen: Freedom of Expression in Peril, the report catalogues  harassment, threats and attacks on journalists and in particular the way the state media is used to insult women journalists and raise questions about their honour if they are critical of the government.

The Yemeni government’s alignment with the US in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 contributed a climate where journalists have been attacked and imprisoned and forced to sign papers agreeing not to report on certain events.

The report calls for the cancellation of judicial procedures against journalists before the Special Criminal Court on Terrorism, the release of journalists imprisoned for their work and investigations into threats against media workers.
