The team behind retro football magazine Backpass has launched a new cricket title called Backspin.
Mike Berry and Sandra Nicholson said they were ‘doing our little bit to keep print alive’and had created work for up to 10 freelance journalists with the pilot issue of Backspin.
Football title Backpass was launched in 2007, moving from a subscription-only title into that one that is now available in most major newsagents in the UK, with a bi-monthly circulation of around 9,000.
The pilot edition of Backspin – which includes a feature on the six sixes of Garry Sobers at Swansea in 1968 and interviews with Derek Underwood, Ray East, Dennis Amiss and Nigel Briers – is likely to become a quarterly ‘very quickly”, according to Berry,
Less than 5,000 copies were produced, but more 1,000 plus have been sold in the space of a week, despite being limited to a small number of WH Smith outlets. It is priced at £3.99.
