New national newspaper for Wales to launch

By Press Gazette

A new national newspaper for Wales – published in Welsh – is due to launch on March 3, 2008, it was announced this morning.

Y Byd will have a staff of 24 and aims to reach 5,000 subscribers.

It is backed by 340 private investors, a ‘suporter’s club’of 1700 and also has funding from the Welsh Assembly and Powys County Council.

Editor Aled Price said: ‘Y Byd will revolutionise journalism in Welsh. For the first time Wales will have a national daily newspaper in Welsh.

‘Y Byd will be full of news – local, national and international. It will be a complete newspaper – incorporating sport, leisure, business and politics. A lively website will also be central to the enterprise as Y Byd breaks new ground with a live online newspaper. This will be the only website in Welsh which will offer a full news service in Welsh.”

Y Byd’s headquarters will be in Machynlleth and will be priced 70p Monday to Thursday and £1.20 on Fridays.
