Irish state broadcaster RTE has appointed Cathal Goan as director general to succeed Bob Collins, who will retire in October.
Goan, currently director of television, came to prominence when he oversaw the establishment of TG4, the Irish-language television service, in 1994. A fluent Irish speaker, he has a wide interest in Irish culture and music, and a reputation of being a “relaxed and affable” senior executive.
