York-based local news website One & Other is to launch an online video channel alongside a monthly magazine.
In November Press Gazette reported on how the website had ambitions to 'secure the future of the local media'after its website went live thanks to funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
The first edition of the magazine comes out next weekend with an initial monthly print run of 15,000 and One & Other online TV channel is on course to be launched a few days before.
It aims to serve York with original, exclusively commissioned programming in collaboration with Parashoots, a film company set up by acclaimed director and screenwriter Mark Herman, whose film credits include The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Brassed Off.
The channel, which the company said will help promising graduates break into the industry, will feature a mix of local news, culture and interviews, and will be available to view in a video-on-demand format on the One & Other website.
The new channel and magazine launch come after One &Other was nominated for digital innovation of the year at the 2012 Newspaper Awards alongside The Daily Telegraph, FT.Com and The Guardian.
One & Other was launched in September with a mission to 're-inject the relevance, intelligence, charm, beauty and purpose'back into the regional news agenda.
The first city to have a One & Other bureau was York but there are plans to launch in another seven cities in the UK within the next three years. A full-time team of five editorial staff currently work for the company along with more than 75 contributors.
The founder and managing director of One&Other, Stuart Goulden, said: 'First online, and now in print and TV, piece-by-piece we are conceiving a local media brand and model fit for the 21st century – one that views the industry challenges as possibilities and simultaneously entertains, inspires, and empowers communities for good.
'Whilst other cities are busy debating how local TV can work in theory, we're releasing our concept into the market first and exposing our inquisitive readership to some incredibly original content."
Parashoots creative director Paul Richardson added: 'The vision for One&Other TV is to create a platform for video content that reflects a general resurgence is localism while, as befitting the O&O brand, aiming to be more imaginative in what we present and how we present it.
'Our aim at Parashoots is to produce fresh and imaginative films that are seen and enjoyed, and One&Other TV is an exciting opportunity to reach new audiences."
One & Other was set up with the help of a small grant from UnLtd, a charity supporting social entrepreneurs, and the print edition has been supported by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
