A journalist is reportedly facing criminal prosecution over claims he used Twitter to name a married Premiership footballer granted an injunction to prevent details emerging of his affair with a model.
This is apparently a separate case from the privacy injunction footballer alleged to have had an affair with former Miss Wales Imogen Thomas who was named yesterday by the Sunday Herald.
The Mail on Sunday yesterday said the journalist facing possible criminal prosecution for breach of the injunction appears on a ‘widely-viewed BBC programme’and writes for one of ‘Britain’s most respected newspapers”.
Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC is reportedly considering whether to issue proceedings for contempt of court – an offence for which the journalist could face up to two years in jail.
According to the Mail on Sunday: ‘It is believed that the messages were written about the player during a recent high-profile football match, which again The Mail on Sunday cannot identify due to court restrictions.”
The journalist told the MoS: ”Basically at this point I can’t say anything at all because it might be in contempt of court. I wouldn’t care a ****, I’d say what I think, but if it’s a possibility of me [going to prison]…
‘And there was a quote I noticed from the lawyers today, Schillings, saying, ‘No one’s going to go to prison over this’, but we don’t know that. Because it could be contempt of court, I think it would be stupid to say anything at all.'”
