John Barnes has been appointed editor of MER – Marine Engineers Review, the official journal of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.
Barnes studied naval architecture at Newcastle University from 1965 to 1968, moving to a tug and trawler builder in Hull as an assistant naval architect in 1970 before starting his journalistic career in 1971 with a spell on The Motor Ship.
He became founder-editor of Ocean Energy in 1975, and has also edited Marine Stores and Safety at Sea.
A 20-year period in PR then followed before Barnes returned to journalism as editor of Safety at Sea in 2001. He then started a second spell on The Motor Ship in 2004.
