Irish Labour Court pension ruling

By Press Gazette

The Irish Labour Court has recommended that there is no justification for the Regional Newspapers Association of Ireland to terminate the defined benefit pension scheme.

The court has also recommended an increase in employer and employee contributions and proposed that RNAI papers that had been excluded from joining, should also be permitted to do so.

The NUJ had voted 82 per cent in favour of industrial action over the scheme being ended.

NUJ Irish organiser Des Fagan said: “Faced with the threat of industrial action, the RNAI was forced to attend the Labour Relations Commission. At the LRC there was an absolute refusal to engage in meaningful negotiations.

“We welcome the Labour Court recommendation, which will be put to our members in a ballot over the coming weeks, after consideration by the Irish Executive Council.”
