Former civil servant to recruit Independent Press Standards Organisation board members

By Darren Boyle

A retired civil servant who was tasked by Tony Blair to clean up political party funding has been announced as chair of the apppointment panel of the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

Sir Hayden Phillips was appointed to the position after being approached by former judge Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers (pictured above) who headed a Foundation Group.

A statement from the ex-Judges’s office said: "The Foundation Group identified Sir Hayden Phillips as the person whom it wished to chair the Appointment Panel.

"Sir Hayden has agreed to undertake this task provided the proposals for the new body, which were circulated last week, receive overwhelming support from the press.

The Foundation Group has informed Sir Hayden of the names of those the Group proposes to invite to make up the balance of the Appointment Panel and he has indicated his approval of these. The Foundation Group proposes to approach them once the process for establishing the new Regulator is fully under way."

Philips also completed a report on the reform of the honours system.
