…support for an appeal to raise funds to erect a plaque to commemorate the Victorian journalist WT Stead, former editor of The Northern Echo.
The green plaque would be erected on his former residence at 5 Smith Square, Westminster.
Stephen Butt of BBC Radio Leicester said: “I am a member of the William T Stead Memorial Society which has its base in Colorado in the United States.
“We have obtained the agreement of the owner of the house in Smith Square and the support of Westminster Council. We just need to raise the money – £1,500 for the manufacturing of the plaque, and fixing it to the house.
“And we would like to organise some form of reception to mark the event.
“Stead was a significant figure in terms of defining the role of newspapers in campaigning and investigative journalism. Our young reporters, just out of broadcast journalism courses, tell me that they are still taught about Stead in their ‘history of’ background courses.”
