The abandonment of editions and the move to overnight printing by gutless regional newspaper managements who have betrayed their core readership is having serious consequences beyond the appalling ABC figures.
A lady of my acquaintance, who happens to be the wife of the editor of a middling regional daily, tells me: “I’m in a state of shock at the moment because his paper has started printing overnight, so instead of leaving home at 6.15am he’s now here until about 8.30 – wanting food and conversation and getting in the way while I’m shouting at the children. Nightmare.”
And so the collateral damage spreads …
