Haymarket suspends publication of Printing World

By Paul McNally

Haymarket has announced the closure with immediate effect of monthly B2B magazine Printing World.

The publisher said “current economic conditions” in the printing industry meant that the title was no longer viable as a standalone product.

It will now be incorporated into sister title Print Week. Haymarket said it was looking to find suitable alternative jobs for the staff affected.

Haymarket bought Printing World from United Business Media for £2.1m in 2006 and turned it from a weekly into a monthly.

According to ABC, it had an average circulation of 13,500 in 2008 – the majority of which was controlled free distribution.

In a statement, the publisher said it remained committed to its other print and packaging titles – including Print Week and Packaging News – which between them employ 50 journalists in seven countries.

Haymarket print and packaging group managing director Wayne Manning said: “I would like to thank all the Printing World team for their hard work on the title over the past three years.

“The suspension of the magazine is simply a sad reflection on the challenging economic situation the title found itself in.”

He added: “Following an in-depth review of the needs of the readers and the industry at large we have decided to focus our entire efforts on Print Week to ensure that the magazine continues to serve its readers and advertisers to the highest level and remains the only ‘must-read’ title in the sector.”
