Gazette rides in for Yorkshire battle

By Press Gazette

By Jean Morgan

The independent publisher of the Holderness, Hornsea and Hedon Gazettes is to launch a new broadsheet weekly for the East Riding of Yorkshire at the end of this month.

The free East Riding Gazette, based at Beverley, will have 70 pages and the editor will be Charles Graves. Neil Speight, who edits the other three titles which are published from Withernsea, will be editor-in-chief. There will be 11 new jobs, three of them for journalists. The broadsheet will be distributed to large urban areas of the East Riding of Yorkshire and North and West Hull and will be on sale in rural areas throughout East Yorkshire and Hull city centre.

A new company, the East Riding Gazette Company, has been formed by publisher Brian Adcock as a sister company to Holderness Newspapers. Speight told Press Gazette: “We have identified the need in this region for more competition and believe the new, high-quality, editorially led newspaper will fill a gaping hole in the market. We are all looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to prove ourselves against some established opposition that has nevertheless grown stale due to its monopoly position.”
