Newly qualified journalist Ros de Sybil is joining the Bahrain-based Gulf Weekly, the lifestyle and listings magazine published by the Al Hilal Group, which also publishes the Gulf Daily News, as a reporter and feature writer.
She is the first appointment of Gulf Weekly's new editor Stan Szecowka, who is re-positioning the title as a community newspaper. He first spotted de Sybil, 24, when he was editing his own newspaper, the Clifton Chronicle, and she came in on work experience.
Szecowka said: "Ros lived in Clifton and contacted me back in the early Chron days to get work experience while on an NCTJ course in London.
She has a magical writing quality and did a couple of exclusive features — one brilliant one on an acclaimed artist who had revolutionary surgery to stop him going blind.
"I wanted to offer her a job on the paper, but didn't have the funds. I am delighted she has agreed to join me in Bahrain."
Since completing her training, de Sybil has been to Africa, written travel features in the Middle East and was working on the Clifton Life magazine in Bristol when Szecowka tracked her down.
