James Brown is understood to have taken over as acting sports editor at The People following the suspension of Lee Horton.
It is understood that Horton is being investigated by parent company Trinity Mirror after it found what it calls “financial irregularities”.
Horton was suspended last week and colleagues believe he will not be returning.
A source at the paper told Press Gazette: “Lee was suspended last week and he won’t be coming back. It’s something to do with money. We’re shocked and James Brown has taken over as sports editor.”
One People insider said that Horton is “a well-liked and charismatic figure who is popular with his staff”.
A spokesman for Trinity Mirror said: “Lee Horton, sports editor, the People, has been suspended on full pay pending the conclusion of an internal investigation into financial irregularities.”
