Extra categories added to sports journalists awards

By Press Gazette

The Sports Journalists’ Association has added three categories to its annual awards.

They are for best interviewer, diarist and team, bringing the total number of awards to nine for writers and seven for photographers.

SJA chairman Peter Wilson said: “The success of the new gala dinner format this year opened up the possibility of expanding the number of awards presented. I am particularly excited about the sports team award because it gives a boost to those journalists who work behind the scenes.”

He said there would also be a new approach to judging, under the chairmanship of former SJA chairman Paul Trow. There will be four judging panels and confirmed heads are Press Gazette consultant editor Philippa Kennedy, Robert Charles from Five and Andy Elliott from PA.

This year’s awards will be presented on 8 March at the Radisson SAS Portman Hotel in London. For more details, call Petta Naylor at Sport England on 020 8273 1500.

Last year’s winners included, Patrick Collins from The Mail on Sunday, Harry Harris from the Daily Express and Michael Parkinson from The Daily Telegraph.
