Ofcom has awarded the new FM commercial radio licence for Durham to The Local Radio Company’s Durham FM.
The new service will be modelled on sister stations Sun FM in Sunderland and Alpha FM in Darlington.
Its
launch director, Brian Lister, said: “The station will have a large
commitment to local news and information and we will be recruiting
local journalists later in the summer.”
Durham FM is due to go on
air in October and will serve an adult population of around 160,000.
The licence has been issued for 12 years.
Ofcom has also advertised a new FM licence for the Barrow-in-Furness area, which has an adult population of around 65,000.
The closing date is 7 July.
