Celebrity weekly Closer has secured its position above the
half-million sales mark and recorded the biggest increase in the
women’s weekly sector, placing it 50,000 copies behind celeb market
leader Now.
The Emap title, which is just over two years old, has gained 12.5 per cent sales year on year taking its circulation to 540,044.
In the last set of ABC’s Closer passed the half million mark for the first time since its launch in 2003.
Closer
editor Jane Johnson said the range of backgrounds of journalists
working on the title had a large part to play in the success of the
magazine.
She said: “Some staff have come from red tops and others from glossy monthlies.
There
is a newsy quality about the magazine which means we get stories first
and exclusively, for example we got the story from runaway mum Kelly
Rogerson who went off to Turkey leaving her kids at home.
“Readers are very discerning and dismiss copycat magazines that look the same but don’t have the stories or quality.”
Market
leader Now, with a circulation of 591,795, remains just over 30,000
sales ahead of its nearest competitor, Heat – but has one of the
smallest increases in sales at 2 per cent.
Heat has gained 3.7 per cent on last year’s sales and is now at 560,438.
Reveal has recorded 273,159, which is up on the figure released for January at 239,907
