Clash crowned Scottish magazine of the year

By Rachael Gallagher

Music magazine Clash has been crowned Scottish magazine of the year at the Periodical Publishers Association’s Scottish Magazine Awards.

The independently published magazine is published 10 times a year and scooped launch of the year at the PPA awards when it launched in 2004.

In September this year the Dundee-based magazine was granted £230,000 by the Scottish government to develop its website Clashmusic.com.

The money came from the Scottish Government’s regional selective assistance programme designed to create jobs and grow businesses.

The Big Issue Scotland was also a winner at the awards held last night at The Radisson Hotel, in Glasgow, picking up two awards.

The magazine’s Adam Forrest picked up consumer feature writer of the year and the magazine won best consumer magazine design.

Customer publisher Think Scotland picked up three awards, with John Innes winning publisher of the year, Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society magazine scooping best designed business and professional magazine and Tree News winning membership magazine of the year.

A new award for special commendation was presented to Arlene Russo, from Revamp, who the PPA said as editor, publisher and distributor, has ‘single-handedly steered here title Bite Me through ten successful years”.

Former chief executive of The Economist and chairman of the judging panel Helen Alexander CBE praised the magazine publishers in Scotland for the diverse range of titles being produced.
