‘Churnalism’ or journalism: the full Cardiff University report

By Martin Stabe wirepost

This week’s Press Gazette contains serialisation of Nick Davies‘ controversial new book investigating Fleet Street, Flat Earth News.

Davies charges that much contemporary newspaper journalism is, in fact, “churnalism” — copy recycled from press releases or the wires.

The claim is backed by new research from Prof Justin Lewis, Dr Andrew Williams, Prof Bob Franklin, Dr James Thomas and Nick Mosdell at Cardiff University.

Cardiff University’s journalism department has today published the full text of the report, “The Quality and Independence of British Journalism” (PDF).
